Grants & Rebates

Growing in a commercial greenhouse facility is an energy-intensive process. As a result, making investments in more energy-efficient equipment can be very beneficial in the long run! BioTherm is experienced in all forms of grants, rebates and incentives available to growers and can provide all the right documentation for the application processes.

Types of Incentives

Rebates

Many utility companies offer some form of assistance via a rebate when new equipment is purchased that is more efficient than existing or standard equipment.

Grants

Grant programs are offered by local, state, and federal governments and differ from rebates. Grants typically require a lengthy application process and have defined set of rules and requirements.

What equipment is eligible?

Now that we have discussed different types of incentives, it is important to understand what types of equipment are commonly incentivized. Greenhouses and controlled environment structures use energy in a unique way and have many options when it comes to reducing energy consumption. A list of commonly employed grower centric technologies eligible for incentives is provided below.

Condensing Boilers

Hydronic heating systems

Energy/Shade Curtains

Condensing Unit Heaters

Variable Speed Drives

Environmental Control Systems

LED Lighting

Structure Re-glazing

Natural Ventilation Structures

AC/Dehu systems

While this list is not comprehensive, it should provide a good place for many growers to start when considering how to become more efficient with their operations. In almost all cases, if growers are making an investment in their energy future and are considering one of the above technologies, incentives will be available and should be explored.

By upgrading to a root zone heating system (Roll’N Grow®) and condensing boilers, I was able to get 75% of the project paid for by the USDA.
